Landscape Architects

To be registered in Rhode Island as a Landscape Architect, you must meet at a minimum the requirements for one of the following categories.

Category 1 – Accredited Landscape Architecture Degrees

  • Graduation from an accredited landscape architecture bachelor’s or master’s program.
    • LAAB or LAAC accredited degrees or other program approved by the Board.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in landscape architectural work under the direct supervision of a registered landscape architect of a grade and character satisfactory to the board. (This may include up to 1 year of experience in related work under the direct supervision of a registered professional engineer, professional land surveyor, or registered architect of a grade and character satisfactory to the Board.)
  • Passing scores on all sections of the L.A.R.E.

Category 2 – Other degree or no degree

  • In lieu of graduation from an approved college or school of landscape architecture, an applicant may present evidence of at least 6 years of practical experience in landscape architectural work of a grade and character satisfactory to the board.
    • Credit may be given for approved college education, in the discretion of the board.

If you do not meet these requirements, you are not eligible for registration in RI.

Do not apply for registration until you have completed all requirements in one of the above categories and documented your qualifications in a complete CLARB Record.

A CLARB Record is required for initial applications and strongly recommended for reciprocal applications. Failure to submit a CLARB Record for a reciprocal application will result in longer processing time for your application because each item must be identified, scanned and saved in your file. Applications will not be reviewed until all required documentation is received and fees are paid.

Licensure requirements are set forth in R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-4.

Notice - In addition to an Individual Landscape Architect Registration, all Firms (Entities) are required to obtain a Certificate of Authorization (COA)

Important Reminder to Registered Landscape Architects — In addition to an individual registration, each Firm or entity, that practices or offers to practice landscape architecture in Rhode Island,  must hold a current Certificate of Authorization (COA).  Check to make sure that your firm (whether sole proprietorship, corporation, partnership or LLC) has a current COA.
